The Quarterback’s First Love – Episode 39

Linda crossed the sideline with an attorney and handed Coach Reynolds a formal complaint. It alleged that Cameron’s transfer involved improper benefits: housing for Maddie, a vehicle, and payments connected to the orphanage.

The claims twisted personal choices into recruiting violations. Cameron had leased the apartment before enrolling, the loaner belonged to a dealership, and the charitable trust had no connection to Central. Still, an investigation could suspend him immediately.

The NFL scout watched without expression. Linda had chosen the stadium because public uncertainty could damage Cameron even if every allegation failed.

Coach Reynolds summoned the compliance director. Maddie produced rental agreements, vehicle documents, and trust records from the evidence folder she had maintained since the first smear.

“You planned for this,” Cameron said. Maddie shook her head. “I planned for people who think paperwork belongs only to the powerful.” Her preparation countered Linda’s influence line by line.

The compliance director found no basis for immediate suspension. A full review would follow, but Cameron remained eligible. Linda’s composed face cracked for the first time.

Cameron approached her before warm-ups. “You kidnapped the woman I love, interfered with her medical care, and now you’re trying to destroy my career. What exactly are you protecting?”

Linda insisted she protected the future the Carters built for him. Cameron replied that a future requiring him to become cruel was not worth preserving.

He asked her to leave. Stadium security enforced Maddie’s protective order and escorted Linda from the field. The scout had witnessed not scandal but a player defending boundaries under pressure.

Warm-ups began late. Cameron’s first passes sailed high because anger tightened his mechanics. Coach Reynolds reminded him that the field rewarded presence, not unresolved arguments.

Maddie stood near the tunnel with the St. Catherine’s children. She called Cameron’s old name once: “Jack.” He looked toward her and remembered who he had been before trophies, money, and family expectations.

His next throw struck the receiver perfectly. The stadium announced its new starter as Cameron Jack Carter, honoring both identities rather than erasing either.

The Knights opened cautiously. Quick routes protected his shoulder, while the running game absorbed contact. Cameron resisted opportunities to scramble even when the crowd urged him forward.

At halftime, Central trailed by six. Commentators questioned whether the injured transfer could finish. Brett watched from outside the team area, suspended and furious that failure had not yet restored him.

Cameron addressed the locker room without pretending he could win alone. He thanked the line, adjusted protections, and asked every player to trust the next assignment. The leadership Coach Reynolds demanded finally looked toward the future.

The Knights tied the game in the third quarter. Cameron’s shoulder ached, but he reported the pain and accepted treatment rather than hiding it. Honesty kept him on the field safely.

Late in the fourth, Central faced third-and-goal. The defense expected another quick pass. Cameron changed the play after recognizing single coverage and delivered a fade to the back corner.

The receiver secured it for a touchdown. The stadium erupted, and the Knights took their first lead. Maddie cheered with children who once believed famous athletes could not come from places like theirs.

The defense preserved the victory. Cameron’s teammates surrounded him, but his gaze found Maddie through the celebration. To everyone else he was the superstar quarterback who saved Central’s opener.

To Maddie, he was Jack—the boy who returned. As she started toward him, a campus officer blocked her path and revealed a new complaint filed in her name: someone had accused Maddie of stealing one million dollars from the Carter family.
