I’m In Love With My Brother’s Best Friend?! – Episode 48
The days after the party felt strangely ordinary. Ryan’s approval had not removed every awkwardness, but secrecy no longer governed the apartment.
Cole and Kaitlyn could sit together without inventing explanations. Ryan complained whenever affection became excessive, then pretended not to smile.
Amber faced disciplinary consequences for the bathroom attack, while Maddy’s academic dishonesty remained with the dean. Their power depended on secrecy and intimidation; public evidence stripped both away.
Kaitlyn began preparing for Professor Calloway’s internship. Success now represented more than revenge against Maddy. It was the future she had chosen for herself.
Cole studied for law exams beside her. Their work sessions contained teasing but also genuine respect. He no longer mistook protection for deciding what she could handle.
One afternoon, he tested her knowledge with a rapid question. What constituted a conflict of interest?
Kaitlyn answered that it occurred when a lawyer’s personal interests interfered with impartial representation of a client. Cole praised the definition.
Then he said his only personal interest was her. Kaitlyn told him to focus, though the smile ruined the reprimand.
She would need a good lawyer soon. Her parents were coming for Parents Weekend, and Ryan’s acceptance did not guarantee theirs.
Cole’s humor faded. Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair had given him food, shelter, and belief when his own parents offered none. Their judgment mattered almost as much as Kaitlyn’s.
He asked when they would arrive. Kaitlyn said any minute. Cole stared at her, appalled that she had withheld the deadline.
She asked whether he had developed a plan. Hiding was no longer available, and neither wanted Ryan to carry the burden of explaining.
Cole decided on honesty. He would tell them he was madly in love with their daughter and would ensure no one ever hurt her.
Kaitlyn objected to being presented only as someone requiring protection. Cole corrected himself: he would support her choices, respect her ambitions, and stand beside her.
She planned to tell them she loved her older brother’s best friend and that he was the only man she had ever truly wanted. The words no longer embarrassed her.
They rehearsed possible objections—age, the former teaching relationship, Ryan’s trust, and the speed of their romance. Every answer returned to their lifelong history.
Cole remained nervous. The Sinclairs had chosen him as family once; this conversation would ask them to choose him again in a different role.
Kaitlyn assured him they would face the reaction together. Whatever happened, she would not allow fear to separate them again.
The doorbell rang. Cole reached for her hand, then paused as another idea formed. Perhaps words alone were not the strongest evidence of commitment.
He told Kaitlyn there was one unmistakable way to show her parents how serious he was. Before she could ask what he meant, Cole reached into his pocket.
