I’m In Love With My Brother’s Best Friend?! – Episode 31

Cole said Kaitlyn was wrong: he did not care about Ryan more than he cared about her. He cared for them differently. The distinction carried a history she had never been allowed to see.

He asked whether she knew why he practically lived at the Sinclair house during high school. Kaitlyn had always assumed he and Ryan were inseparable. Cole’s expression warned that the truth was darker.

His parents had abused him. The admission entered the warm living room with devastating quiet. The confident athlete and brilliant law student disappeared behind the memory of a boy afraid to go home.

Kaitlyn set down her glass. She had known Cole most of her life, yet no one had told her. Childhood scenes rearranged themselves around this new truth.

The Sinclairs were the reason he ate dinner many nights. Her parents never asked why he arrived hungry; they simply made room at the table. Their ordinary kindness became his survival.

They attended every football game and cheered as though he were their son. When recruiters began calling, they helped him sort opportunity from exploitation. They believed in him before he could safely believe in himself.

Later, they helped with law-school applications and gave him the stability to pursue a future. Scholarships and talent had opened doors, but the Sinclair family made it possible for him to walk through them.

Kaitlyn reminded him that football programs across the country had wanted him and law schools offered full rides. Cole shook his head. Ability alone did not feed a hungry teenager or teach him that home could be safe.

He could not have accomplished any of it without her family. Ryan was not merely a friend; he was the brother Cole had chosen and the bridge to the only loving parents Cole had known.

If Ryan rejected him, Cole feared losing the entire family. That was why being seen with Kaitlyn terrified him. His secrecy had never come from embarrassment.

Kaitlyn moved closer. Anger yielded to grief for the boy he had been. She wished he had trusted her enough to explain before distance became cruelty.

Cole admitted he was accustomed to surviving alone with secrets. Asking for understanding felt more dangerous than accepting blame. Kaitlyn had mistaken silence because he gave her nothing else to interpret.

She touched his hand. Their game had begun as flirtation, but the discarded clothes no longer mattered. Cole had revealed something far more intimate than his body.

Kaitlyn told him that loving her did not automatically erase Ryan’s love. Her brother might be angry, but anger was not abandonment. Cole could not imagine that certainty as easily as she could.

The fear belonged to someone who had once lost safety whenever adults became angry. Kaitlyn understood that logic alone would not remove it. Trust would have to be built slowly.

Cole apologized for making her feel hidden. Kaitlyn accepted the apology without promising secrecy forever. Ryan would eventually need the truth.

The drinks remained untouched while they sat together. Cole’s confession changed the stakes between them: choosing Kaitlyn no longer threatened only friendship but the family structure that shaped his life.

Still, she refused to become another sacrifice made in the name of survival. Cole deserved family, and she deserved a love that could stand in daylight. Both truths had to coexist.

Cole told her it was her turn in the game. His voice was unsteady, but he was no longer hiding. Kaitlyn considered what question could match the honesty he had offered.

She looked into his eyes and made one final assumption: he had feelings for her. Cole went still. After revealing why he feared love, he now had to admit whether fear had stopped him from falling anyway.
