Reborn to Love Mr. Right – Episode 71
The second envelope remained sealed inside Arianna’s mother’s letter case. Unlike every archive packet, it carried no future date or electronic signature. Her mother had written one instruction across the flap: “Open only after both keys are gone.”
Federal technicians confirmed the furnaces had destroyed the master keys beyond reconstruction. No continuity signal remained in the rural laboratory. Arianna nevertheless waited until Donald and Hayden joined her before breaking the seal.
Inside lay a strip of photographic film and a handwritten frequency. The film showed an older Donald seated alone in the Taylor mansion, recording a message beside Arianna’s empty wheelchair.
Donald studied the image without recognizing the room’s damaged walls. His future self appeared decades older than the man who died in Arianna’s remembered life. The photograph belonged to an earlier branch neither of them recalled.
The frequency matched the first signal received by Arianna’s mother before her birth. It proved the transmission originated from older Donald’s recording device, though not why it reached so far backward.
A note explained that the full message remained stored in an analog receiver beneath the original Taylor greenhouse. Arianna’s mother had separated it from the laboratories so Victor could never find the origin through corporate systems.
The greenhouse had been replaced after storm damage, but Donald remembered a sealed irrigation room beneath its foundation. Workers opened the floor and discovered a copper-lined chamber untouched for years.
At its center sat a reel-to-reel recorder connected to no power source. The film already waited on its spindle. When Arianna pressed the mechanical switch, older Donald’s voice filled the room.
He spoke from a timeline where Derek’s first betrayal happened differently. Arianna survived the crash but disappeared after Hayden died protecting her. Donald lived long enough to watch Victor turn grief into repeated experiments.
The older man had helped future versions of both mothers construct a single backward signal. He did not ask the past to make Arianna wealthy, obedient, or safe from every pain. He asked only that she be allowed to choose before Derek took that ability away.
His signal contained her name because regret centered on the moment he stopped listening to his daughter while trying to protect her. The continuity receiver translated that regret into the phrase found before her birth.
Present Donald turned away from the recorder. Arianna saw grief for a daughter he had never lost and shame for choices he had not made. She held his hand before either feeling became another private burden.
The message continued with a warning. Victor detected the transmission after it left and built Mirror Archive to intercept future responses. Every later reset grew from the struggle between Donald’s request for choice and Victor’s desire for control.
Older Donald believed the cycle would end when no one needed another signal. He left a deletion code for the original receiver, but using it would erase his complete message and the proof that Arianna’s mother never designed the system for profit.
Hayden suggested preserving a court-authenticated copy before deletion. Arianna agreed because ending the mechanism did not require erasing the people who resisted it.
Technicians duplicated the analog reel under independent supervision. The original remained inside the receiver while Arianna entered the deletion code manually.
The copper chamber vibrated as stored energy discharged into the ground. For several seconds, Arianna heard overlapping versions of Donald calling her name. Then the receiver stopped.
No new photograph appeared. No archived identity protested. The first signal and every route built upon it had finally lost its source.
Donald asked whether Arianna wished the older version of him had sent more guidance. She answered that his one request had been enough because it gave her room to become someone he could not predict.
Outside the greenhouse, reporters surrounded the estate gates. Someone had leaked the image of older Donald and claimed Taylor Industries possessed technology capable of rewriting death.
