The Call Boy I Met in Paris – Episode 78

Justin closed his fingers around Sophie’s hand as if confirming she was real. Paris moved around them—cups touching saucers, bicycles passing beyond the terrace, sunlight catching the old stone—but for Sophie, three lost years narrowed into that single point of contact.

“I am still angry,” she warned.

“About the CEO secret, my mother, or the three years it took me to find you?”

“All of it.”

“Good.” His thumb brushed her knuckles. “Anger means you plan to stay long enough to make me answer for it.”

Susan emerged from the café and stopped when she saw them. Surprise gave way to understanding, and she greeted Justin with a warmth that told Sophie the older woman had never blamed him for the bargain that saved her life.

“Mrs. Lake contacted me,” Susan admitted. “She apologized and asked me to help convince you to come home. I told her that choice belonged to you.”

For most of Sophie’s life, family had treated her choices as obstacles to be overcome. Hearing that Justin and Susan had defended her right to decide mattered as much as the reunion itself.

“Swift Enterprise is stable,” Justin said. “Kendall has protected your interests, Cooper was convicted, and Karen and Stella are serving sentences for what they did. Nothing is waiting to drag you back into the old war.”

“And your mother?”

“She knows that welcoming you is the only way to keep me in her life. More importantly, she knows she was wrong.”

Sophie looked at the Paris street where their story had unknowingly begun. She had once offered money to a stranger because leaving him helpless felt wrong. Years later, she had offered money again, believing she could purchase a husband without risking her heart.

“Our original contract expired a long time ago,” she said.

“I never accepted the expiration date.”

“Then we need new terms.” Sophie stepped closer. “No secret identities. No disappearing for someone else’s good. No deciding what the other person can survive without asking.”

Justin nodded solemnly. “And no paying your husband ten thousand dollars a month.”

“I was overpaying you anyway.”

He laughed and pulled her into his arms. When he kissed her, the distance between the hotel, the boardroom, the warehouse, and Paris finally disappeared.

Sophie had gone looking for a stranger who could help her escape a broken engagement. She found the man who remembered her kindness, chose her without conditions, and crossed three years to bring her home. This time, when she called Justin her husband, neither money nor necessity stood behind the word—only love, freely chosen and finally returned.
