Daisy woke with her hand still locked around Nolan’s. For a quiet moment, she allowed herself to study the man beside her without anger. Then he opened his eyes, and she released him as though caught stealing.
“Security,” Nolan reminded her, preserving the excuse. Daisy threw a pillow at him and escaped to dress before her embarrassment became visible.
At breakfast, a glass cracked in her hand. She had barely tightened her fingers, yet a thin fracture spread from rim to base. The power inside her was not gone after all.
Nolan took the glass before it cut her. A flicker of red moved through Daisy’s eyes and vanished. The return was weaker than her awakening but strong enough to confirm the seal was unstable.
“Your grandfather needs to come here,” Nolan said. Daisy agreed. Whatever he had hidden could no longer be protected by silence.
The older man arrived under guard and found Daisy waiting in Nolan’s office. Maps of vampire activity surrounded them, leaving no gentle way to approach the truth.
“You knew,” Daisy said. “You saw my eyes change before the gym. You said you thought we had more time.”
Her grandfather looked toward Nolan, then back at the granddaughter he had tried to protect. “Your mother made me swear not to tell you until there was no other choice.”
“My father was a vampire.” Daisy formed the conclusion herself. Saying it no longer felt impossible.
“Yes.” The answer seemed to age him. “Vera was a wolf, but the man she fled was not. You carry both bloodlines.”
Daisy waited for the room to shift. Half wolf and half vampire explained why no wolf had answered her, why her body awakened under the moon in a form everyone feared.
“Who was he?” Nolan asked. His control tightened around the question.
Her grandfather shook his head. Vera had never spoken the father’s name, even to family. She claimed knowing it would endanger everyone who loved Daisy.
“She hid me from him,” Daisy said. Her mother’s silences changed meaning again. Vera had not been ashamed of her child; she had been afraid of being found.
The thought brought fresh grief. Daisy had spent six months believing her mother died angry with her. Now she understood that Vera’s final years had been shaped by a secret Daisy never had the chance to forgive.
Nolan asked about rituals or objects capable of suppressing vampire power. Her grandfather knew only old warnings: blood magic could seal an awakening, but the person who cast it would need proximity.
Someone had stood beside Daisy while she slept. Nolan’s anger darkened the bond, and guards outside shifted as his authority spread through the mansion.
“I don’t want to be hidden again,” Daisy said. “No locked rooms, no decisions made without me.” She looked at both men, demanding more than reassurance.
Nolan agreed to teach her the security plan and include her in the search. Her grandfather promised that whatever truth remained, he would no longer keep it from her.
Daisy left the office knowing what she was but not whose blood had awakened inside her. Somewhere beyond Eastwind, a vampire had spent eighteen years waiting for her to become visible.
