Married at First Sight – Episode 39

The deeply disturbing image of Grandma Norton trapped inside the unfamiliar car instantly erased every remaining trace of professional calm from Christian’s face. Bryant demanded access to the frozen funds and complete control of the Veridian evidence. If Christian involved police, he threatened to make the old woman’s location disappear permanently.

Summer reminded Christian that compliance would not guarantee her safety. Bryant needed leverage only while the evidence threatened him. Surrendering it would remove the single reason he had to keep Grandma Norton alive.

They alerted federal agents through a silent emergency protocol while replying as if prepared to negotiate. Christian requested proof of life. Bryant sent a short video showing Grandma Norton seated in a server room, irritated rather than visibly injured.

She looked into the camera and complained that her captor had not provided proper tea. Beneath the humor, her left hand tapped against the chair in a repeated rhythm. Christian recognized the childhood code she used during family games: third floor, east side.

Grandma Norton also shifted her chair twice, briefly revealing a yellow pipe behind her. Engineers identified it as part of the old cooling system serving the concealed mezzanine. Even while frightened, she turned irritation into intelligence.

The abandoned data center’s public plans showed only two floors. Summer searched renovation permits and found a concealed mezzanine classified as cooling infrastructure. Its eastern room connected to a freight lift and separate power supply.

Agents planned entry, but the building contained active servers that Bryant could destroy remotely. Those machines likely held the original biometric profiles and transaction logs. Rescuing Grandma Norton mattered most, yet preserving evidence could protect thousands of future victims.

Summer suggested isolating the building from external networks before entry. A utility shutdown would trigger backup generators, but a fiber junction outside the property carried all remote communication. Cutting it would leave local systems running while trapping Bryant with his data. The plan carried risk. If Bryant detected the interruption before agents entered, he could harm Grandma Norton or destroy local drives manually. Investigators rehearsed both routes while the negotiation team stretched each exchange by questioning transfer details.

Christian authorized engineers to assist law enforcement. He remained at the command post, hating every second he could not enter personally. Summer stayed beside him, not to restrain him but to share the helplessness he once carried alone. She kept one hand over his clenched fist until strategy replaced the impulse to charge inside.

Bryant ordered the funds released within fifteen minutes. Christian pretended to initiate the process, sending screenshots prepared by the clearing bank. Meanwhile, agents reached the fiber junction through a drainage corridor hidden from the data center’s cameras.

The connection dropped. Bryant immediately understood he had been isolated. He attempted to wipe the servers, but the command could no longer reach off-site backups. Inside the building, alarms activated and emergency doors sealed.

Grandma Norton used the confusion to strike her guard with a metal teapot. The live camera tilted as she freed one hand and moved toward the exit. Christian watched in disbelief while muttering that no kidnapper had ever been less prepared for his grandmother.

Agents entered the third-floor mezzanine and reached her before Bryant. She objected to being carried and insisted on walking out with the teapot as evidence. Her resilience relieved Christian without softening his fury.

Bryant fled toward the server vault carrying a portable drive. He threatened to destroy the biometric master keys if officers approached. The keys could prove the scale of the scheme, but agents prioritized arrest and safety over preservation.

Before he activated the destruction command, Elise remotely supplied investigators with an administrator phrase Bryant believed only he knew. The vault entered preservation mode and locked him inside. His own security design became the cell that held him.

Grandma Norton reunited with Christian outside the heavily guarded building and scolded him for looking so frightened. He embraced her before she could finish speaking. Summer saw the formidable woman’s expression soften as she held the grandson whose marriage she once manipulated into existence.

Bryant was arrested with the drive intact. The servers contained cloned profiles for executives, judges, regulators, and political donors. Veridian had sold not merely financial access but the ability to manufacture consent from powerful people.

Hidden folders also contained profiles of assistants, nurses, donors, and maintenance workers. Power determined the value of each stolen identity, but vulnerability determined how easily it was collected. The system had exploited both ends of society.

The evidence cleared Christian of authorizing Leon’s transfers. The board reinstated him unanimously, though he requested continued independent oversight until every affected transaction was reviewed. His return would be measured by reforms rather than celebration.

Grandma Norton refused hospitalization after doctors found only bruising. Back at the apartment, she demanded the honeymoon resume immediately because criminals had already stolen enough newlywed time. Summer promised to consider it after everyone slept.

Christian finally allowed exhaustion to surface. He confessed that seeing his grandmother on the screen made every rational strategy feel unbearable. Summer told him fear did not cancel wisdom; courage was choosing evidence while love demanded panic.

As they prepared for bed, Jess called with news from the recovered Veridian files. One cloned identity belonged to Summer, created before she ever met Christian. Its source recordings came from blood-donation clinic cameras used during the years she financed Vincent’s education.
