American Sniper: The Last Round โ€“ Episode 51

The targeting map pulsed over St. Adrian Military Hospital while Viktor Soren’s vessel moved toward the coast. Matthew Valentine and Dr. Helen Ward occupied different secured floors, yet one red circle covered the entire building. Whatever weapon Soren had activated was designed to erase witnesses, records, and patients together.

Ruiz ordered an evacuation before confirming the threat. Hospital administrators resisted until Elena transmitted the vessel’s weapons telemetry and Cole’s compromised security directives. Jane Valentine watched ambulances begin moving intensive-care patients and understood how easily secrecy could have turned delay into casualties. Nurses carried records beside oxygen tanks, preserving calm for patients who had no idea why their rooms were suddenly unsafe.

Carl Oliver studied the vessel’s course. A conventional missile launch would be detected by coastal defense, but Soren had purchased experimental cargo drones through Meridian. Each could carry a small charge beneath civilian flight corridors and arrive looking like medical deliveries.

Rachel Fisher identified three likely launch containers on satellite images. Black Widow requested a rifle and rooftop access, offering to intercept the drones before they reached the city. Ruiz allowed it under direct supervision because there was no better long-range shooter available besides Carl.

Lewis remained at the range with Rebecca while Carl and Jane flew to the hospital. He disliked being separated from the operation, but his treatment had not restored his full strength. Protecting Rebecca and coordinating wind data gave him responsibility without pretending recovery was complete.

At St. Adrian, Matthew refused to leave until he spoke with Jane. He said Soren’s face belonged to Sergei Smith, a weapons financier who used several international identities. Matthew had met him once through Sergei’s son, Hank, the man who connected Valentine Bank to Meridian.

Hank Smith controlled an assassin network called the One. Meridian had been its government-facing branch, useful for contracts and official protection. Sergei supplied money and foreign buyers, while Hank recruited shooters who treated violence as status.

Dr. Ward brought Lewis’s treatment records into a hardened case. She warned that the files named prisoners and physicians still hidden inside the One’s facilities. Losing them would destroy more than evidence; it would erase the only path to people who had never been reported missing. Several entries were the first proof their families had received in years.

Elena detected six cargo drones leaving the vessel. Their routes divided across the city before converging on the hospital from different heights. Coastal defense could not fire without risking aircraft and neighborhoods beneath them.

Rachel took position on a parking tower while Carl climbed the hospital roof. Lewis relayed wind layers from weather stations along the coast. The first drone appeared as a dark point between clouds, too small and fast for an ordinary shooter. Its civilian paint and medical markings demonstrated how thoroughly the One depended on hesitation from anyone trying to stop it.

Carl fired into its forward rotor, sending it into the empty river channel. Rachel destroyed a second above an industrial yard. They alternated targets, using the city’s geography to choose safe crash zones instead of merely striking the machines.

The third drone changed course toward an evacuation convoy. Jane saw its path from the command room and redirected ambulances beneath a concrete overpass. Carl’s shot severed the guidance antenna, but the drone continued on momentum until Rachel struck its battery.

Two more fell outside populated areas. The sixth vanished from radar before either shooter acquired it. Elena discovered it had landed on the hospital roof disguised as a ventilation unit before the attack began. The airborne group had been a distraction.

Carl found the false unit beside the surgical exhaust system. Its charge was wired to release chemical agent through the ventilation ducts. Disarming it required a code transmitted from inside the hospital network.

Jane searched access logs and found a newly hired orderly using credentials issued that morning. Security cameras showed him moving toward Matthew’s floor. Hank had placed a man inside to complete the attack if the drones failed. The layered plan treated each defense as information for the next assault rather than an obstacle.

She intercepted the orderly beside the elevators. He drew a suppressed pistol from the medication cart, but Jane trapped his wrist against the metal frame. Hospital security helped restrain him before he could reach the protected rooms.

The assassin carried a controller displaying the rooftop charge. Elena copied its handshake while Jane forced the emergency elevator into maintenance mode, isolating the signal from the hospital network. Carl used the recovered code to shut down the chemical release.

Ruiz’s agents opened the controller and found a recorded invitation. A younger man in an immaculate suit introduced himself as Hank Smith, director of the One. He praised Carl’s defense and said his father had spent years creating a challenge worthy of the King of Guns.

Hank offered Carl command of the One’s shooters in exchange for ending the investigation. Jane, Rebecca, and Lewis would receive protection, while every charge against Carl would disappear through international influence. Refusal, Hank promised, would make the hospital attack look merciful.

The recording ended, but a live message replaced it on Carl’s phone. A photograph showed Rebecca leaving the temporary range office with Chris, taken only seconds earlier. The angle came from inside the range perimeter, not a distant public road. Beneath it, Hank had written: Your answer belongs to the people you claim to protect.
